An electric service upgrade involves the complete replacement of the electrical service around the house. This includes the service cable line from the street to the house, meter base, weather head, the grounding and bonding system, and the electrical panel itself.

In comparison, an electrical panel upgrade is typically replacing the panel of the same size. Most times when homeowners are looking to upgrade their panel, if they upgrade to a larger panel, they could need a service upgrade if the service cable from the street to their house is for the lower service size.
