Should You Get an Extended Warranty for Your Air-Cooled Generator?

A power outage can disrupt everything. That’s why investing in an air-cooled generator is a smart move for homeowners. But like any significant purchase, you might be wondering about protecting your investment. A common question is: “Should I get an extended warranty for my air-cooled generator?” Luckily, Generac offers various comprehensive options for homeowners at every stage of generator ownership.

What's Covered Under Generac's Warranty?

Generac offers different levels of warranty coverage for their air-cooled generators. While specific details can vary depending on the model and purchase date, here’s a general overview:

  • Limited Warranty: Generac generators typically come with a 5 year limited warranty. This usually covers parts and labor for a 2 years from the date of purchase and then only the engine and alternator for all 5 years.

  • Extended Warranty: Generac offers extended warranty options that go beyond the standard limited warranty. These extended plans provide additional years of coverage, up to 10 years of coverage, giving you peace of mind and protection against unexpected repair costs. These plans are available for purchase within a certain timeframe after generator installation.

When Should You Purchase an Extended Warranty?

The best time to consider an extended warranty is when you purchase your generator. This ensures continuous coverage beyond the initial 5 Year- Limited Warranty Coverage.  Often, purchasing the extended warranty upfront can be more cost-effective than buying it later. Generac requires an extended warranty to be purchased within the first year of ownership. So, to get the full coverage warranty of 10 Years bumper to bumper, we recommend you purchase it at time of installation with our team.

How Do You Purchase an Extended Warranty?

  • Through Oregon Generators: The most common way to purchase an extended warranty is us, your Authorized Generac Dealer. We are able to apply these extended warranties directly to your generator without requiring assistance from Generac’s Warranty team.
  • Directly from Generac (Sometimes): In some cases, you may be able to purchase an extended warranty directly from Generac. Check their website or contact their customer service for more information.

Benefits of Having an Extended Warranty

  • Peace of Mind: Knowing you’re covered for unexpected repairs can give you significant peace of mind, especially during severe weather seasons when power outages are more frequent.
  • Budget Predictability: Extended warranties help you budget for generator maintenance and repairs. You’ll avoid potentially large, unplanned expenses down the road. A generator controller replacement can be upwards of $1,000 or more depending on other factors involving the repair.
  • Protection Against Rising Costs: The cost of parts and labor can increase over time. An extended warranty locks in the cost of covered repairs, protecting you from future price hikes.
  • Transferability: Extended warranties are transferable to a new homeowner if you sell your property, which can be an attractive selling point. As long as the generator is not moved from the location from which it was installed at, you can transfer the extended warranty to the new home owner.
